Background
Why Don't We Together started out with a short panic, and a little dream.
I (josh) signed up to do a scratch night at Suitcase in Point, and with about 2 weeks before I was set to get up in front of a crown and present my art I had no idea what I planned on doing. But I knew I liked telling stories, I liked music, and I wanted to try something with lighting. So I got on the phone with Alex, and we had an idea. We used a little lightbulb that could be controlled from my phone, and hung it over my head. And then in about 4 days I wrote 5 different little bits, a poem, a story, and some ramblings. (I wrote it in 4 days while working full time, it wasn't all my best work.) We gave each one a colour and a song. James McCoy ran the tech and I presented what I had. I knew pretty quickly we were onto something, but it needed a bit more work.
6 months later, we had given it more thought, and had a rhizome spot at In The Soil.
We were going to build the hut, get stories written, and make a full experience out of this nugget of an idea.
What is Why Don't We Together?
Why Don't We Together was born for the first time that summer. We wanted to wrap an audience in colourful lights and immerse them in sound. So that's what we set out to do. Small audiences sat inside an octagon, and the walls, seats, and ceiling came alive with light as the Hut filled with sounds. The sounds were stories, written and recorded by friends, and sound designed by Alex and I. With music, sound effects, co-ordinated lighting effects, the stories came alive in the Hut. The dream was to create an environment like no other for sharing stories. I think I sat in the Hut for no more than 2 seconds before I knew we had achieved that. If you get a chance I would suggest you sit inside the Hut too, you'll know right away it's something a little special.
But the environment was only a part of the wonder. The stories from our friends were written and recorded by some incredible artists we've had the wonderful pleasure of coming to know over the past years. They were all stories of hope, community, joy, and love. They were rich and deep. They made me feel deeply the first time I heard each of them, before adding music, sound, lighting, or the Hut at all.
Beautiful stories, in a beautiful storytelling space. That is what Why Don't We Together is.
